GenomELECTION: Science Communication Subproject

Impact of Different Science Communication Approaches on Public Understanding and Perception of Genome Editing

Staff:

Dr. rer. nat. Katrin Vohland (project management), Dr. phil. Julia Diekämper, M.A., Carla Hegerl (student assistant)

In cooperation with Dr. Alexandra Moormann, MfN, scientist in the education and outreach department.

In order to bridge the gap to the application of genome editing methods a public discourse about ethical and legal questions is indispensable. This is why the science communication subproject of GenomELECTION researches to what extent practical experience and targeted programs of the science communication influence genetic literacy. It also researches to what extent this affects ethical and legal considerations including the concepts on “naturalness”. For this purpose, the science communication subproject will research how different instruments of science communication on genome editing within the framework of health research and crop plant engineering affect the perception of the participants. In addition, it analyses what role the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Bio-Community plays in the societal anchorage and assessment of the genome editing debate.
