Prof. Dr. phil. Matthias Kaufmann

Matthias Kaufmann studied mathematics, philosophy and political science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the University of Osnabrück/Vechta. In 1986, he obtained his doctorate at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. His thesis was titled “Law without rules? The Philosophical Principles Of Carl Schmitt’s State Theory And Legal Doctrine” for which he obtained the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize in 1988. His habilitation on the topic “Reference And Truth In The Works Of Wilhelm Ockham” followed in 1992 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Matthias Kaufmann has held the Professorship for Ethics at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg since 1995. In the summer of 2005, he held a Guest Professorship in Brazil on various topics relating to ethics, which included medical ethics. Moreover, he has been Spokesperson for the graduate school Society and Culture in Motion (SCM) at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg since 2008. Since 2009 he has been a member of the Accademia di Scienze morali e politiche der Società Nazionale di Scienze, Lettere e Arti in Naples. His work priorities lie within the fields of ethics, applied ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of law and philosophy of language in the Middle Ages and the 20^th century.

Since October 2016, Matthias Kaufmann is the project leader of the ethical subproject of the joint research project „GenomELECTION“, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
