Dr. rer. nat. Katrin Vohland
Katrin Vohland started studying Biology at Bielefeld University from 1989 until 1991. She continued at the University of Bayreuth and finished her studies with a diploma thesis titled “Use of Resources and Behaviour of a Lady Beetle”. She obtained her doctorate in 1999 with a dissertation on the topic “Studies on Adjustment and Speciation in the case of Pycnotropis tida (Diplopoda: Polydesmida: Aphelidesmidae: Amplininae) in Amazon flood areas” at the Max Planck Institute for Limnology in Plön (Department for Tropical Ecology) at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science of the University of Kiel. Furthermore, she worked at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin from 1999 until 2004, being engaged in research on biodiversity and land use in Southern Africa. She also worked at the Chair for Vegetation Ecology and Nature Conservation University of Potsdam mainly focusing on restoration ecology. Following that, she coordinated the project “Nature Reserves in Germany in Climate Change – Risks and Options for Action” at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research from 2006 until 2009. Since September 2009 she has been working at the Museum für Naturkunde – Leibniz-Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Research in Berlin at the interface between biodiversity research and politics, where she is entrusted with managing the research programme “Public Engagement with Science” as well as the department “Science in Society” since 2012. Her research focal points are on communication science and citizen science. Katrin Vohland is Chair of the Cost Action Citizen Science to promote creativity, scientific literacy, and innovation throughout Europe and Deputy Chairwoman of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) and co-editor of „Citizen Science: Theory and Practice“.
Since October 2016, Katrin Vohland has been the project leader of the communication science subproject of the joint research project „GenomELECTION“, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
